What happens to your cells when you age?

Scientists call the aging process – the loss of a cell's ability to divide and grow – senescence. Telomeres are the caps at the end of our DNA strands that protect our chromosomes from damage; during senescence, they naturally shorten. When telomeres become critically short, cells die.
