What is Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)?
ESWT is an innovative pain management solution. The shockwave is an audible, physical sound wave “shock”, not an electric one. Many years of experience, since the 1980’s in fact, have confirmed that certain pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones – in other words the root causes of your pain – can be eliminated systematically with this non-invasive therapy approach. In modern pain therapy, shock wave energy is applied to the painful body regions, where it can accelerate the healing process in the body by stimulating the metabolism and improving blood circulation, and can regenerate and fully heal damaged tissue.
Common Pain Conditions Treated by Shockwave Therapy
- Plantar Fasciitis, ex. heel pain
- Elbow pain, ex. tennis or golfer’s elbow
- Shoulder pain, ex. shoulder calcifications
- Achilles tendon pain
- Patellar tendonitis, ex. jumper’s knee or Osgood-Schlatters disease
- Trigger points/muscle tension
- Chronic neck and back pain
How does Shockwave Therapy work?
First the technician localizes the pain region by palpation and discusses the findings with you. A skin gel is then applied to the treatment area to allow the shock waves to be introduced into the body without any loss of energy. After these preparations, shock waves are applied as the therapy head is moved over the pain region in a circular motion.
The treatment breaks down scar tissue and/or calcification. The body responds by increasing metabolic activity around the site of pain, stimulating and accelerating the healing process (promotes the remodeling of dysfunctional collagenous tissues, such as trigger points, muscle strains, etc.).
Each treatment takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on the disorder being treated. Most people can easily tolerate it. However, if it becomes too uncomfortable, adjustments on the machine can decrease the pressure you feel.
How many treatments will I need?
The beneficial effects of ESWT are often experienced after only 3 to 5 treatments. Some patients report immediate relief after the treatment, although it can take up to 4 weeks for pain relief to begin and between 9 to 12 weeks to see complete results. Studies demonstrate the most significant healing is between 6 to 9 weeks.
Possible Side Effects?
The extracorporeal wave has virtually no risks or side effects. In some cases patients may experience some minor discomfort, which may continue for a few days. Similar to what you may experience after a full day’s work or intense exercise.

Novus Success Stories:
I suffered from chronic low back pain for years. Debated surgery, but I was advised against it. After one treatment of ESWT, I couldn’t believe the immediate relief. I thought it was placebo effect, but it kept improving with the following three treatments. I told my spine specialist he should be sending people here before they consider surgery. Amazing! – Daniel W. 50s
I was diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma in my right foot years ago. Always had problems walking or standing for long periods of time. Even had cortisone shot. After ONE treatment of ESWT with Stephanie, I was able to walk all day at Disneyland with my granddaughter and not feel pain. Unbelievable! This really works! – Steffi Jo 60s
I came in with a very bad tear in my shoulder, and they suggested that I go through a round of “shockwave” therapy to heal it. Though the name may sound intimidating, the results are nothing short of a miracle! After four sessions lasting over 2 short weeks, my shoulder is completely healed. The pain was minimal during the session, in fact it mostly felt like a really strong rubber band snapping quickly on my skin. I recommend this therapy to anyone looking to heal an injury, or break up any scar tissue that has built up over time. – Keri L. 40s
